AI Referral Traffic

Website visits that come from users clicking a citation or link in an AI engine's answer (for example from Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or ChatGPT). It's the most direct owned-data signal of AEO working — but it captures only click-throughs, undercounting the larger zero-click impact of being seen in answers.

AI referral traffic is website visits that arrive when users click a citation or link inside an AI engine’s answer — from sources like Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT with browsing, or Copilot. It shows up in your analytics under referrer domains such as perplexity.ai and chatgpt.com.

Why it matters

It’s the most direct, owned-data evidence that your AEO work is paying off: a cited page earned a click. Visitors arriving this way often have high intent, since they followed a recommendation made in context.

The important caveat

AI referral traffic captures only the users who click. The larger effect of AEO is usually zero-click — users read your brand in an answer and act later without clicking. Some engines also pass referrer data inconsistently. So treat AI referral traffic as a floor on your impact, not the full measure.

See how to track AI referral traffic for setup, and pair it with visibility monitoring of the answers themselves.
