Generative AI

AI that creates new content — text, images, code, audio — rather than only classifying or retrieving it. Generative AI underlies answer engines that synthesize responses from many sources, which is precisely why AEO exists: brands must influence what these systems generate about them.

Generative AI is artificial intelligence that creates new content — text, images, code, audio, video — rather than only classifying, ranking, or retrieving existing data. Large language models are the most prominent example.

Why it matters for brands

Generative AI is the reason AEO exists. Traditional search retrieves and ranks existing pages; generative engines synthesize a new answer from many sources. That means a model can describe, recommend, or omit your brand in language it composes on the fly — so brands must influence what these systems generate about them, not just where they rank.

What it changes

  • The output is synthesized, not a list — being the named answer matters more than a ranking.
  • Representation is generated, so accuracy and consistency of your information directly shape how you’re described.
  • Discovery happens without clicks, since the answer often satisfies the user in place.

Understanding generative AI is the foundation for understanding AEO and GEO. See also answer engine.
