Query fan-out is a technique where an AI engine takes a single user question, expands it into several related sub-queries, retrieves sources for each, and synthesizes the results into one answer. Google has described this approach as part of how AI Mode and AI Overviews work.
Why it matters
Fan-out means you can be surfaced for queries the user never literally typed. If someone asks “best CRM for a small agency,” the engine may silently search for “CRM pricing for small business,” “CRM with project management,” “CRM reviews from agencies,” and more.
What it means for AEO
- Broad topical coverage wins. Content that thoroughly addresses a subject and its sub-questions can be retrieved across many fanned-out queries.
- One great page isn’t enough. A cluster of related, authoritative content matches more of the fan-out.
- Sub-questions matter. FAQ sections and comprehensive guides map directly onto the queries engines generate.
